The Birdhouse Project

The Birdhouse Project was completed by students enrolled during Spring 2019 in Professor Hugh Crawford’s course, LMC 3308, Environmental Ecocriticism. Assisting Professor Crawford were Building Memories intern, Yonatan Weinberg, and graduate student Udaya Lakshmi. Partners for the course were Professor Jacqueline Jones Royster, the coordinator of Building Memories, and Ms. Christi Jackson, Director of the Conservancy at Historic Washington Park. Funding for the project was provided by the Serve-Learn-Sustain Program at Georgia Tech.

With each of the buildings, the goals were for the students: to build a birdhouse; research the community importance of the building; research the birds that might occupy the birdhouse and the environments in which they live; produce a podcast; and create an interactive display to be installed in Historic Washington Park. The class also created a website to capture and present the work that they did in the course.

We are grateful for the partnership on this episode of:

  • Community Partner Christi Jackson, Director of the Conservancy of Historic Washington Park.
  • Campus Partner Hugh Crawford, Professor of English in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication in the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts at the Georgia Institute of Technology; the students enrolled in his course LMC 3308, Environmental Ecocritism, the two teaching assistants for the course, graduate student Udaya Lakshmi, and undergraduate student Yonatan Weinberg.

We note that these partners took full responsibility for planning, developing, and producing this episode, and for building a website for the course. On the Building Memories team, Rachel Hu took the lead in designing the link between the course website and the Building Memories website, and Steve Hodges provided technical support.
